Juventus 3 - 0 Catania
Juventus - Catania 3-0
Goals from Marco Marchionni, Sebastian Giovinco and Alessandro Del Piero mean Juventus are comfortably through to the Coppa Italia quarter finals as they thumped Catania in Turin.
Pre-match and build up
Juventus and Catania came into this fixture knowing a quarter-final clash with Napoli was up for grabs. Claudio Ranieri decided not to risk a number of stars with Giorgio Chiellini being rested while Sebastian Giovinco was given a starting role.
Walter Zenga made a few changes of his own too as Giuseppe Mascara, who started against Napoli at the weekend was rested. Takayuki Morimoto was not in the squad and Michele Paolucci started from the bench.
First Half
Both teams started the game brightly and it was tight early on with the first real chance fell to Giovinco. Good work by Sissoko allowed Del Piero to break and the captain fed the pint-sized striker. Giovinco took on Silvestre on the edge of the box, made space for himself and struck a powerful effort towards goal that forced Bizzarri into making a good save on his near post.
Minutes later the intense start from Juventus paid off as Marco Marchionni gave his side the lead. Paolo De Ceglie's cross was met by Alessandro Del Piero who headed towards goal, Bizzarri made an instinctive save, but he spilled the ball into the path of Marchionni and he smashed the ball into the roof of the net from point-blank range.
Catania tried the instant response with Martinez after Lorenzo Ariaudo's sloppy pass allowed the Sicilians to attack. However, Buffon came to the rescue with a decent save.
Down the other end, Juventus had appeals for a penalty waved on when Amauri was brought down in the box, Giovinco crossed on the follow up and the ball fell to Sissoko but the former Liverpool man wasted his chance though as he hit the ball straight at the 'Keeper.
The Sicilian side were struggling and Juventus were being granted too much freedom and they were finding the way to Catania's area with constant ease. Chance after chance was being created by the Bianconeri, and it was only down to some poor finishing that the scores stayed the same as the half wore on.
Excellent link-up play between Giovinco and Amauri should have seen the home side extend their advantage. Passes were exchanged between both men and the Brazilian striker laid it on a plate. Giovinco's finish was powerful, but just inches away from hitting the target.
Del Piero twisted and turned both Silvestre and Stovini and smashed a diagonal left-foot shot from the edge of the box across the penalty area, but his effort came back off the inside of the post and Catania were able to clear.
Second Half
The early talking point for the restart was the referees failure to spot the Catania goalkeeper missing from in between the sticks. Luca Banti blew his whistle as everyone looked baffled. He quickly realised his mistake and ordered another kick off, leaving the players to laugh off the unexpected lapse in concentration.
Giovinco, who was outstanding all night, broke down the left wing to cut a decent pass back to Del Piero. The number 10 set up Marchionni, but his finish was straight at Bizzarri. Minutes later the Sicilian's 'Keeper made a miracle save from Del Piero.
The Juventus dominance continued, but they were unable to double their lead. Marchionni, Giovinco and Amauri all had clear cut chances however, a good combination of saves and some less than perfect finishing ensured Catania escaped further embarrassment.
It wasn't long before Juventus increased their lead. In a scene which resembled the master and his apprentice, Giovinco played a magnificent one-two with Del Piero who returned the favour and the youngster finished brilliantly. The scoring wasn't over there though.
Del Piero put the game to bed with a stunning finish following Marchionni's hard work down the right. The former Parma man the captain and he finished well with a classy left-foot finish which caressed the top-corner.
Catania were never in the game. The Sicilians just couldn't wait for the final whistle. Spark, motivation were not with the players on the night. The Bianconeri were having fun and at times it was target practice.

Manninger - 6.5: Did not have a single save to make until the last 10 minutes, but then made a smart stop to deny Ghezzal.
Grygera - 6.5: Troubled by Kharja in the opening 20 minutes or so, but then settled down. His cross almost led to Amauri doubling Juve's lead, while he made a crucial late block on Ghezzal.
Legrottaglie - 6.5: Solid in defence, as he has been all season, winning everything in the air.
Mellberg - 7.0: Filled in well for star defender Chiellini, and made a key last gasp tackle on Frick on the hour mark.
Molinaro - 6.5: Had shown signs of improvement before Christmas, and was sound today. Combined well with Nedved down the left.
Marchionni - 5.5: Carried out his job, but seems to lack the confidence at times to try and take on his man.
Marchisio - 6.0: Some nice touches, including a delicious nutmeg on Galloppa, but could not match his standout display against Milan in December.
Sissoko - 6.5: Imposed himself physically on the game. Made some trademark sliding tackles in the middle-of-the-park before he was replaced midway through the second half.
Nedved - 7.0: Juve's best player in the first half, when he was full of running, winning the free kick for Del Piero's goal. Not so prominent in the second period.
Del Piero - 8.0: After a magnificent 2008, Del Piero began 2009 in style with a majestic free kick to win Juve all three points. Wasted the chance to double his side's lead, but it didn't matter.
Amauri - 7.0: Excellent up-front again again. Held the ball up, created a fine chance for Del Piero, but did squander a good opportunity of his own when he headed wide

Serie A resumed after the mid-season break, and Juventus were handed a late Christmas present as Inter were held at home by Cagliari last night, meaning the Old Lady could cut their lead at the top to four points by beating Siena.
Claudio Ranieri's men were still crippled by injuries though, as Andrade, Zebina, Trezeguet, Knezevic, Camoranesi, Iaquinta, Salihamidzic, Chiellini, Buffon, Tiago, and Ekdal were all out. Alex Del Piero and Amauri led the attack.
Siena had a few selection problems of their own, as Vergassola, Rossettini, Belmonte, Maccarone were injured, while first-choice goalkeeper Gianluca Curci was suspended.

The away side wasted an excellent opportunity a quarter-of-an-hour in, as Ghezzal skipped past Zdenek Grygera, and cut back for Emanuele Calaio, whose shot struck Nicola Legrottaglie. Siena players cried for a penalty for handball but the referee waved away the appeals.
Kharja was causing Juve all kinds of problems, and midway through the half he turned smartly inside the area before rifling just wide of the near post.
All the attacking was coming from Siena, as Juve struggled to get their game going, and Calaio was the next to try his luck, heading wide from 12 yards.
It took until the half-hour mark for Juventus to register their first shot on target, as Del Piero fired tamely at Emanuele Manitta from 30 yards.
A few minutes later Juve were ahead, and it was that man with Del Piero, who curled a brilliant 25-yard free kick over the wall and past Manitta. Incredibly it was the Golden Boy's sixth free-kick goal of the season already.
There was little of note for the remainder of the half, as Juve went in at half time a goal to the good.

Siena had barely threatened in the second half but, with eight minutes remaining, they twice went close to an equaliser. First Manninger was forced to turn Ghezzal's daisycutter around the post. Then, from the following corner, Grygera threw himself into a miraculous block as Ghezzal seemed destined to volley home.

Apart from the result, which is not so important in friendly matches, Mr Ranieri can return from Messina with a number of positive indications. Against Monaco we saw the return of a few of the players who had been injured but most of all the team spirit was evident and this shows that the team is ready for the matches that count.
Hasil akhir meskipun tidak terlalu penting dalam pertangingan persahabatan, Ranieri kembali dari Messina dengan sejumlah indikasi positif. Juve lose on penalties
Ranieri’s men clad in blue for the occasion, seem determined right from kick-off. The match is a good test before the second part of the season and it seems that the bianconeri know this well.
The first twenty minutes of the match are totally dominated by Juventus with Buffon between the posts from the first minute.
In the 3rd minute Nedved fires a powerful shot but the ball is safe in the hands of the goalkeeper. Two minutes later Amauri steals a ball and does a great run before shooting with the ball being saved by the goalkeeper. Del Piero does not manage to conclude from the rebound. In the sixth minute its Marchisio who shoots but the goalkeeper saves not withstanding the shot being powerful. Three minutes later Marchionni serves a great cross into the area with Amauri heading to goal but the Monaco goalkeeper saves into corner. From the subsequent corner Nedved shoots high over the post.
The 13th minute sees a touch of class by Del Piero who kicks the ball with his heel but the resulting shot is weak and the goalkeeper collects easily. Four minutes later a series of crosses ends with Nedved passing dangerously into the area but nobody manages to strike home from a very inviting position. In the 29th minute it’s the captain who tries to open the score with a shot that goes wide.
Notwithstanding the constant attacks by Juventus it is Monaco go ahead in the 34th minute. A defensive error leads to Legrottaglie grounding Adu in the area with the referee assigning a penalty in favour of the French side which is scored by Gakpè.
Juventus continue where they left off before the goal and in the 37th minute Amauri and Nedved both make an attempt at goal following a series of passes in the Monaco area but the ball is cleared by the defence. In the 42nd minute Del Piero from a free-kick shoots dangerously but the ball is central and the goalkeeper manages to save with some difficulty. Two minutes later it’s the Monaco goalkeeper who saves after a dangerous cross into the area.
At the end of the first half the referee awards free-kick for foul on Nedved. Del Piero takes it with the ball inches over the post.
The beginning of the second half is characterised by the substitution of 9 out of 11 of the Juventus formation with the only Ariaudo and Legrottaglie (sporting the captain’s band) remaining from the team of the first half.
In the 50th minute Monaco are awarded a free-kick after Manninger punched the ball outside of the area. The Austrian goalkeeper makes up with a great save. Three minutes later Giovinco passes to Iaquinta in the area but the Monaco defence manages to clear.
On the 54th minute De Ceglie passes to Giovinco after a good run who enters the area passing centrally but no bianconero is there to tap in. One minute later Giovinco dishes out a great shot but the goalkeeper saves. In the 57th minute Poulsen passes with his heel but the ball is cleared.
In the 65th minute Bad foul on Ekdal just outside the area lands Juventus a dangerous free-kick. Giovinco hits the post incredibly. Giovinco is showing his worth and this can bee seen from a series of good passes and attempts to goal such as the shot saved by Thuram in the 66th minute.
On the 70th minute its once again the Atomic Ant who goes close to scoring but the Monaco goalkeeper manages to put the ball into corner. It is time for yet another change for Juventus with Chimenti coming on for Manninger. Seven minutes later Juventus risk after a Salihamidzic error with the Bosnian who manages to make-up with a good clearance. On the 80th minute Iaquintra tries to head home following a good cross but Adriano clears well with the Juventus attacker touching the ball last.
The rhythm of the match clearly fell due to the many substitutions made. However, in the 83rd minute Giovinoc puts the ball high from a free-kick following a good action by the bianconeri. One minute later young Monaco player Germain heads the ball high from a dangerous position.
In the 85th minute Giovinco manages to go round a defender to enter the area but the Monaco defence clear into corner. Two minutes later Iaquinta passes to Giovinco following a good run on the right flank but the Monaco defence anticipate the young star.
On the 89th its Bakar for Monaco who shoots wide but the missed goal is soon turned into a goal for Juventus. A long pass which crosses most of the field reaches Iaquinta with the clever attacker who puts the ball behind Thuram for the 1-1 with the referee whistling 3 times for the end of the match.
The match goes to penalties with Monaco having the best after the only error from the 11 meters is committed by De Ceglie.
